What is SolarMed Atlas about?

The "Solar Atlas for the Mediterranean", which is a GIS-based free online database for solar radiation data will bring high resolution (1km), long term coverage (at least 15 years) data on the available resources for the target region. This project will lower the risk in solar energy investment and will therefore be a part of a successful business environment getting solar energy to work in the target region. The lower risk will ease the initial project development and financing of solar energy projects.

RENAC is work package leader on Capacity Building. In this role, RENAC will implement a Train-the-trainer programme and coordinate the implementation of open trainings. The project is funded by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) within the German International Climate Initiative (IKI).

Objectives of the SolarMedAtlas project

The available solar resource is the "fuel" of solar energy applications and its availability is a key economic parameter in system design. So far, only coarse resolution (100 km) data or with very limited temporal coverage (on year) is available for most of the region. Both is not sufficient for the implementation of large scale solar energy systems.

Results:

  • First time high resolution data base (1 km) for the whole region for GHI and DNI accessible via open web interface
  • first time long term data base (15 years or more (raw data available for a period 1991-2010) for the whole region for GHI and DNI
  • Data provision through a distributed architecture compliant to the GEOSS architecture.
  • Easy to use multilingual user interface with intuitive navigation and innovative features

Project consortium

The online portal provides global horizontal and direct normal irradiance data for the southern and eastern Mediterranean region and supplies high resolution (1km), long term coverage (20 years 1991-2010) data on the available resources for the whole target region.

The project consortium includes the following partners:

  • German Aerospace Center, Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, Department of Systems-Analysis and Technology Assessment (Coordinator)
  • Armines / Mines-ParisTech, Centre Énergétique et Procédés
  • Transvalor
  • GeoModel Solar
  • OME, Observatoire Méditerranéen de l’Energie
  • RCREEE, Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Renewables Academy (RENAC)
