The use of renewable energy has been captivating the world in the last decade as seen by a steady rise in its interest in both the developed and developing countries. Usage of any of these technologies depends absolutely on the availability of the renewable energy resource to be harnessed. This course takes you through the different existing RE resources and then focuses on the commercially viable existing renewable energy technologies while appraising their suitability for different situations and different parts of the world and culminating with an introduction to how the electricity sources can be integrated into the grid.

Topics

  • Renewable energy status and market development
  • Fundamentals of energy and solar radiation
  • Photovoltaics (Off-grid, grid-tied)
  • Bioenergy- solid biomass, biogas, biofuels
  • Small hydropower
  • Wind energy technology and project development
  • Solar thermal technology
  • Grid integration of renewable energy sources

The course is designed to:

  • Provide comprehensive overview of the main commercially-viable renewable technologies and their economics in urban/rural setting
  • Give a structured overview of the different renewable energy sources, how they can be harnessed and used for the provision of electricity, heat and cold
  • Present the different systems, their components, how they are designed and work
  • Analyse the renewable energy markets and latest market trend
  • Provide a platform for discussion of personal projects with other participants from around the world

After the seminar, you will be able to:

  • Describe how each technology works
  • Assess the appropriateness of each technology for different situations
  • Undertake initial system designs and sizing
  • Recognise the main renewable energy market sectors
  • Communicate effectively and knowledgably with technology suppliers and customers

This training will suit those who:

  • Are new to the subject of renewable energy
  • Would like to start a career in this exciting field
