This online programme provides a detailed introduction of what PV-diesel systems are, what they are for, and how they are planned and implemented.

It covers the most important economic aspects of renewable energy project planning and describes how the most common public policy support mechanisms work. The programme also looks into how banks view the risks related to renewable energy projects, and examines the parameters they use to assess any new project’s bankability in order to decide whether they will get on board and finance it. To this end, the programme includes a checklist for project developers to ensure that potential partner banks receive all the data they require in the way they require it.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Introductory courses

The programme includes access to short introductory courses on energy and electricity topics to provide participants with the opportunity to learn or revise the basics. These courses are not mandatory and are not covered in the exam.

Core courses

The programme contains three core courses on the essential financial considerations of renewable energy projects. These courses are mandatory and are a part of the exam.

  • Methodology of project valuation
  • Policy Frameworks for RE Power Generation
  • Renewable energy project finance

PV-diesel hybrid electives

The elective specialisation of this programme in PV-diesel hybrid systems includes one optional course introducing the various aspects of this technological option and one mandatory course on the planning of PV-diesel hybrid systems.

After completing this programme, you will be able to:

  • calculate the relevant economic parameters of a renewable energy project;
  • decide which support mechanisms are applicable;
  • prepare the data required for a bankability assessment; and
  • define the necessary steps from planning to O&M for a PV-diesel hybrid system. 

Upon successful finalisation of the training, you will receive a RENAC Certificate.

This programme is suitable for you if you:

  • are charged with planning or developing a renewable energy project;
  • need to deal with various stakeholders in a project appraisal process; or
  • will supervise the implementation of a PV-diesel hybrid system.

Lecturers

Lars Koerner, RENAC

Current position:


Lars Koerner is the head of the Solar Energy/Energy Efficiency/Rural Electrification department at Renewables Academy (RENAC) AG. Lars joined RENAC in 2014. Throughout his time there, he has coordinated and conducted international training sessions and train-the-trainer programmes primarily in the field of solar energy systems. He has also designed, equipped, and installed several training centres. He specialises in off-grid systems and PV-Diesel-Hybrid system (mini-grids) for rural electrification or C&I applications.

Professional experience:
Before joining RENAC, Lars gained several years of experience as project engineer and senior product manager at SolarWorld AG. There he engineered and managed several rural electrification projects. His experience in the area of solar energy spans further through his work at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Almeria, Spain and at Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg, Germany. He is an expert in sizing and simulation of solar energy systems as well as the co-author of the off-grid systems chapter in Planning and installing photovoltaic systems: a guide for installers, architects and engineers (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sonnenenergie (DGS), 2013).

Education:
Lars holds an engineering diploma in Environmental Engineering / Renewable Energies and is also a state-licensed electrician.
